Just when I’d finally got around to setting it up properly, twitter has gone and cancelled notifications via SMS on its UK number. You can still update your stream via the number, but you won’t get alerts, direct messages etc via SMS now. I guess that this all comes as part of the deal that saw Twitter get an extra $15m in VC funding.
Meanwhile the good folks over at brighkite have decided to support UK SMS updates! There’s been a group of people nagging away at this for quite a while so it’s good to see that these companies are listening.
SMS updates may seem like a trivial thing for brightkite, but for me (and I guess many others) it makes the difference between me actually using the service and not. I have, but don’t use, 3g (or any equivalent) on my phone, and it’s obvious that not everywhere I go gives me wireless access. So how was I supposed to make use of a location-based service if I couldn’t update by text?
Anyway, now I can so the world is a little bit better than it was last week. Just wish I hadn’t forgotten my phone today.
Oh, one last thing that has caught my eye, Twitly. Twitly is a way of setting up groups within twitter for when you want to use the functionality, but not share your conversation with the world (i think!) - perhaps that’s not possible - but that’s what I hope it does!
